Welcome to Pathogen Profiles, our new weekly series focused on common (and often invisible) dangers in drinking water. Over the next four weeks, we’ll be exploring specific bacteria and pathogens that pose a risk to your health—starting with one of the most infamous: E. coli.
What Is E. coli?
Escherichia coli, or E. coli, is a naturally occurring bacteria found in the intestines of humans and animals. While many strains are harmless, others—like E. coli O157:H7—can cause severe illness and even death. Each year, thousands of people worldwide are affected by contaminated water and food sources.
When it comes to drinking water, E. coli should never be present. The acceptable count? Zero. If your water tests positive for coliform bacteria (often an indicator that E. coli may be present), immediate action is required.
Where Does It Come From?
-
Contaminated groundwater or surface water
-
Well systems compromised by flooding or animal waste
-
Poorly maintained septic systems
-
Human-to-human contact via improper handwashing
E. coli contamination is invisible and can't be detected without proper testing—making proactive disinfection absolutely essential.
Disinfection: What Works—and What Works Best
Disinfection refers to the process of killing or inactivating disease-causing pathogens in water. Traditional methods include chemical treatment (like chlorine) and boiling. But both have major downsides:
-
Chlorine can leave behind toxic by-products and requires precise handling.
-
Boiling is slow, energy-intensive, and impractical for everyday use.
Why UV Light Is the Smartest Solution
At Wyckomar, we specialize in UV disinfection—a powerful, chemical-free process that uses ultraviolet light to destroy bacteria, viruses, and parasites in water.
Here’s why UV is superior:
-
Kills E. coli and other bacteria effectively
-
No chemicals to store or measure
-
Works continuously, 24/7
-
Targets pathogens with precision (we can calculate exact UV Dose for any application)
Our UV systems are designed to exceed the industry’s 3-log (99.9%) disinfection standard, offering peace of mind for homes, farms, off-grid properties, and more.
Proudly Canadian. Scientifically Proven.

Next Week:
We’ll look at Leptospira—an invisible bacteria with dangerous ties to floods and farm runoff.
Until then, stay safe—and stay informed.
